Matt was born in Northeast Philly (Mayfair to be exact!) but moved to the East Falls area about 3 years ago. He has been a competitive rower his whole life, from the time he was 14 until he expended his NCAA eligibility while rowing for Temple University. When he was just a senior in high school, he was part of a boat that won the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the biggest high school race in the world. In college, he was part of a boat that finished third at the IRA Regatta (College National Championships) and as a junior, made the varsity heavyweight 8 (being the smallest member by five or six inches!). His team finished as the tenth fastest boat in the nation and were invited to race in the Henley Royal Regatta in England. One of his proudest moments was being able to pull a 6:17.4 as his fastest 2,000 meter erg test. After many years of competing, Matt was able to spend a year coaching the novice rowers at his high school.
Matt’s passion for CrossFit started after viewing a documentary called “Every Second Counts”, which was the precursor to the CrossFit Games, while on a screening committee for a film festival in Philadelphia. A few months after seeing the documentary, he was sent to 215 by his newspaper to photograph the owners and a class for a feature article. Shortly after, he was in the On-Ramp class and the rest is history.
Although Matt may not have any CrossFit certifications, he is always imparting wisdom inside the walls at 215. His accomplishments as an athlete have been memorable including competing in his first competition back in the summer and cleaning more than 20 pounds over what he had done previously.
Education: B.A. In Journalism with a minor in Business Administration from Temple University
Certifications: I’m not officially “certified” in anything relevant to CrossFit but I consider myself a top level comedic presence in the 6 a.m. classes that I attend. I do, however, have plenty of certification and education in the world of photography.
Favorite WOD: Anything that combines rowing (obviously), cleans and double-unders. I seem to enjoy doing longer workouts (10+ minutes) as well.
Least Favorite WOD: GHDs can kiss my ass.
